Custom Stain for Floors

The wood flooring left something to be desired.  It was in terrible condition, but the price was right for what I wanted to do with it.

Knotty Pine floors

Custom flooring is not an easy proposition on my project budget.  But like all things when I set my mind to something it is hard to get me to give it up.

I decided that I would stain every board for the new floors before installing them... one at a time all different colors.

Materials for 700 square feet of pine flooring

  • 1 Gallon Light Grey Blue Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain and Sealer
  • 3 Quarts of additional tints: Deep Grey/Black; Light Grey/White; Deep Red
  • Additional samples for more red, darker blue and lighter blue tints

Over a few days (weeks) I stained the boards, sometime with the help of my mini, by mixing the colors randomly.  Some boards got 100% of a color but for the most part I would do about 5-6 at a time and then add more of one of the colors to either

  • lighten using white/grey to make tints more opaque and bright
  • darken using black/grey to make shades more shear and deep
  • make more purple using Bordeaux

Next I decided to find a way to deal with all of the huge knot holes in the boards: Fill them!

I started with epoxy and a range of items to fill the holes with.  Unfortunately the epoxy is so hard that it really won't be the final solution for the floor, but never fear... Polyurethane will work for the final touches.  It does mean the the whole house will need to have poly applied but I can live with this to achieve the look that I really want.

The process for staining each board is long and laborious.  That doesn't mean that a five year old can't help.

Each board will take more or less of a pigment.  There is no way to control it.  When staining inside make sure that the area is clear for you to lay the boards out to dry.

I completed tests using epoxy to full the holes in the floors.  These board will not be used.  Instead the holes will be filled after installation.

The images here show how little color was added to some of the boards.  Almost like a purple wash to give a bit of color.

The large knots will be filled with little treasures.  As you walk through the house, once complete, you can look down to see what surprises look up at you.

BEHR PREMIUM® Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer is used to complete the first steps on the custom finish.

Although I picked the colors marked below to start the staining any of the colors shown can be mixed and will harmonize.  Be aware of which tones you are looking for. I was going for cooler colors and mixtures.  But I could have easily used warmer colors to have a very different result.
